Gloria Steinem Gloria Steinem was born on March 25, 1934. Her parents divorced when she was at the age of 8, and she ended up living with her mother in poverty. At age 15 she turned to living with her sister to get away. Steinem then ended up at Smith College and graduated in the year 1956. Shortly after, she began her studies in India where she has a revelation. She realized how much people take their lives for granted. After moving to New York in 1960 she became a journalist. During her career as a journalist she wrote freelance articles for popular magazines and eventually started her report of Playboy Bunnies. This was her first exploration of discovering feminism. She decided to put herself into the Playboy Mansion as a Playboy bunny, undercover, and see the lives of the women. She, in turn, found women exposed to poor working conditions and low wages for working in clubs. She then decided to consolidate with Hugh Hefner where she discussed with him the idea of Women’s Rights.
In 1989 Steinem became top editor New York magazine and wrote her own column “The City Politic.” This is where the idea of Women’s rights involved with politics took part. She soon after became the speaker for women’s liberal movement and in 1971 joined the National Women’s Political Caucus. In the same year she started her own magazine called Ms.. This magazine ended up to be the first feminist magazine created. She used her own eprsonal experiences to create a mind set of how soceities should be. Women should have equal rights with men, both white and black. the ERA, Equal Rights Amendment, said that both men and women, of both races, should have equal rights in everything. This incudes jobs, businesses, organizations etc She sope for the women who didn't want to spend their whole lives in a kitchen tending to her husbands needs. She wrote of her personal experiences and shows not only other women, but people in general how unfair life for women really is. She encouraged women to fight for their rights, stand their ground and never back down. In 1993 she was inducted into the Women’s Hall of Fame, and she is still working today.
